September 30th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. On Friday, September 26th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or something else with orange to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Students will be engaging in learning next week to honor this important day. Through read alouds and activities, students will focus on understanding what they each need to feel safe and cared for at school and to consider this question: “What action can each member of our school community do to make sure every student feels safe and cared for at school, everyday?” This week is an opportunity for Northern Lights students and staff to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community.

Make sure you read our blog posts next week to learn more about the activities and learning students are doing in our classroom.

Homework:

Students who did not complete their work in class have taken it home:

- silhouette art

- good copy of their letter to self

We started the week off with a team building activity, The Tallest Tower.  Students needed to find common traits amongst their group to build a tower out of index cards.

Math

This week, students have been practicing reading and writing numbers up to the millions, all the way to the thousandths place. They’ve been learning to represent these numbers in different ways - using two expanded forms, standard form, and both written and pictorial methods.

We also started building our repetoire of problem solving strategies by watching this TedEd.  Challenge your family members to see if they can solve this problem!

Science

We further studied the difference between climate and weather by analyzing climate zones around the world.

We had our orientation from the library!  Look for library books coming home next week!

We met our grade two buddies from Mrs. Buzanko's class!

We researched and read about Terry Fox.  Students created doodle art, choosing powerful words to represent him as an individual.

We set goals for the Terry Fox run and set out with the grade 2 students!

We calculated the total of donations for the Terry Fox run and 5D raised $70.95!

We wrapped up our week by learning an introduction to coding on Scratch by animating our names.

Enjoy the weekend!
