PICTURE DAY

October 2 is individual school photo day and group photo day.  The times are not set and predictable, so we ask that families do their best to have their children at school for the full day to avoid being missed. Thanks for your help!

OPEN HOUSE

It was wonderful meeting all the families at Open House last night! If you weren’t able to attend, please feel free to email me to schedule a time to visit next week.

WEEK FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

We read I Am Not a Number and began Fatty Legs to learn more about the experiences of individuals who attended Residential Schools.

We worked with our buddies this week to find out how to make sure all students at NLS feel safe and respected at school.

Students reflected on how people might have felt attending Residential Schools and contrasted that with how they should feel in school today.   Each student wrote how students should feel at NLS on a piece of orange ribbon.  We tied the ribbons on the fence with our grade 2 buddies.  They also learned about Canada's response to the 94 calls to action on an outdoor gallery walk.

To honour the Autumnal Equinox, we walked to the storm pond to observe changes from summer to fall.

We had a presentation about Cyber Safety from Youth Link which is the Police Interpretive Centre in Calgary.  Please note the website to learn more information.  Students learned:

-the safe age to join social media, including Roblox (13)

-only “friend” someone they personally know

-how to create a safe profile and password

-what catfishing is

-when to block someone

-talk to a trusted adult when they feel uncomfortable online

We chose cities from different climate zones around the world to observe and record their weather patterns.  We built anemometers to test the wind speed in different locations around the school yard.

Enjoy the long weekend!
